Improving Student Achievement Through The Creation of Relationships

This session will examine the tenets of Critical Race Theory through the personal stories of Ms. Dome’s schooling, demonstrating the impact, both positive and negative, that teachers have on the academic achievement, as well as social and emotional growth, of their students. Participants will have the opportunity to both hear practical examples of how race shows up in schools and examine how race shows up in their personal and professional lives. By becoming aware of the institutional structures that perpetuate racial disparities among students and having common language to discuss the manifestations of these disparities, participants will be able to begin engaging in compassionate dialogues about what is necessary to create change. Using the theoretical framework of CRT, Ms. Dome’s stories will illuminate the powerful impact creating meaningful relationships has on the lives of your students.
